Although bokeh by itself is quite nice (at least in my opinion), it is even nicer with something that is in focus, as you can see by the portrait at the top. To make the bokeh, I waited until the sun was shining on the sea and then I manually unfocused the picture as much as I could.

To take a picture of something that moves fast, making the time frame for you to take the picture very limited:

-Leave the camera turned on if possible, with the settings already chosen.

-One of the most important things is to use a high ISO, that way you can prevent blurriness, however, make sure you don't turn it up higher than the camera can handle or the quality of the picture will suffer, as it will have a lot of 'noise', or little dots on the picture.

-You may want to turn off the flash if the sudden light might scare the animal, if that is what you're taking a picture of.

- A good way to make sure you get the picture at the right time is to press the shutter halfway and then the rest of the way at the precise instant that you want the picture of. That way you can get rid of the time lag between focusing and actually shooting, which could be essential.

I find that sepia coloring works well with people, especially when the background is nothing special. This setting can be found in many point-and-shoot cameras.

Portraits: Common Mistakes

Okay, so here's the deal. Last Saturday I allowed someone else to use my camera for a while. With all due respect to this person, allow me to point out common mistakes in the pictures that were taken.

1. Someone else is in the picture but not really in it. Or in this case, their butt is in the picture. Not attractive people, not attractive. Also, the background is distracting, and the placing of the subject is off- it is neither in the exact center nor is it quite enough to the side that the eyes are drawn to him.

2. The subject is so near that you can clearly see all his defects, such as pimples or bags under his eyes. Also, part of the head is cut off. It is better to get all the head in and then a bit of space over it, or a lot of space- it depends on the feeling you want to convey and on the setting. Practice will help you get it right.

3. Not enough background- or not any! This kind of picture can be overwhelming to look at. You need to make sure that there is a background. If it's too cluttery, use a lower aperture so that it will be blurry and not distract from the person's face. Backgrounds like plain walls, the sea, the beach, grass and trees are all good ones when you want the picture to be focused on the person and not anything else.

4. You can't see the person's face. In fact, almost the only thing you can see in this picture is the boy's arm and elbow- not particularly attractive from a photographic nor from a more documental point of view. You are not evoking any memories or emotions by photographing a person's elbow. Now, there are cases in which it is fine not to show the person's face- but these are rarer than not, and the more practice you get as a photographer, the more quickly you will recognize these moments.

5. The subject is blurry. This has an easy solution: higher ISO, more light, or half a second more when clicking the shutter to ensure that your camera correctly identified your main subject and focused on it. There is nothing else really wrong with the picture, sure, it could use more light; but it otherwise looks fine. Since it is so easy to solve this problem, please make sure to do so!

Sometimes, all you need to do is be at the right place at the right time- and be lucky enough that you didn't scare the little bug away. It helps if your camera doesn't make noise, you don't make noise, you don't touch the bug and you are quick in choosing the right settings.

More About Light- and Roses

This is the same rose. But can you see how much the type of light and exposure can change the mood and the feeling that the two pictures convey?

Admittedly, I changed the brightness and contrast on my computer, but the basic photo was very similar to the final product. I took the picture just as the sun was shining very brightly on the rose, and with the lowest exposure (-2) to take attention away from the background (the bricks) and onto the rose. I find the result very intriguing.

This other picture is very pretty also, but it is more similar to what other photographers commonly take. It is less unique, although still nice. The placing of the rose on the side, rather than the center, and the low aperture used help to make it stand out a little more.

Photography is all about light. Get the wrong kind of light and your picture is ruined. Be it too dark or too light, the truth is that light is the greatest protagonist of your image.

That is why you must make sure to get the right kind of light.

The right kind of light is not always the same. Depending on the kind of mood you want to create, the subject and many other factors, you will want one kind of light or another. If you want to highlight the sunset, for example, you will want to underexpose, but if it's already dusk, you may need to overexpose to compensate.

Shadows are important to consider. If the light is very strong, contrary to popular belief, you won't get good portraits. Either the person will be squinting back at you, or harsh shadows hide half of his or her face.

For obvious reasons, you wouldn't take a picture of a person at night.

And then there's the best kind of light- at least, in my opinion. The kind of light you get more or less an hour before sunset or an hour after sunset. Soft and pretty.

I think it makes for a very cheerful kind of picture. You judge:

This is a picture I took about twenty minutes ago of my dog. The moment I saw the way the sunlight looked as it illuminated the grass, I knew that it was perfect. The hardest part about taking this picture was getting the dog to stay still. I tried to have him sit, to no avail, and got several shots of his antics (see below), before finally taking this picture.

Today's subject of choice: Vainilla, the sweetest cat (I'm being ironic, of course). This little one brought home another mouse. Which reminds me, that I sure have come a long way from those blurry pictures, although to my defense I was just trying to get a half decent picture and I was in a rush, since the cat was playing with the poor little thing all over the yard.

Nonetheless, I think it is a good exercise for all of us to go over our photographs, not just the latest ones that we finally saved onto our computer, but also older ones, analyzing what we did right, what we did wrong, and what we could have done to improve the picture. That is the best way to learn.

For instance, take this picture:

Had I had the patience to wait about half a second more, I would have caught the little child with the hand in the air, which is the signal that they managed to build the entire tower. It is a much more representative moment of the castellers, which is the cultural custom depicted. The tower is not quite in the center, and the building in the back subtracts attention from the people.

However, I also think that I did well in using the 'vivid' settings rather than, for example, black and white, which would have looked much less full of life. I also did well in capturing a sequence of their building the human tower, as I can see as I look through my pictures several moments and stages of the building. Finally, I also think I was right in adding a lot of sky at the top of the picture and in taking a vertical picture, which is much better for the picture.

What do I learn from this picture, though?

I have learned that when there are elements in the back that could distract rather than add to the attractiveness of the picture, I should use a low aperture. I have learned that I must try and have patience so that I can capture the peak of action, and not almost. The way to do this is to press the button halfway and then, in the precise instant that I want the picture, press all the way down, except when using flash, which usually takes longer. And also, I have learned to be more careful about placing subjects: be it in the middle, or at the side (my personal favorite), just not somewhere in between that is not quite defined.

I like photographing vacations. Photography allows you to notice things more easily, so you notice more details of what you are seeing. It allows for plenty of different perspectives and you can have several subjects, if you have the luck that they are willing to pose or at least, act natural around the camera. As a photographer, few things can be more annoying than someone ruining a nice picture by putting his hand in front of his face. Experience, however, will allow us to be faster about taking the picture and the subject to be more used to having the camera in front of him or her.

I never did get around to finishing last summer's series (Venice Days, Vienna Days, etc.), and although I know summer ended eight months ago, here we go. I will be posting a few of those pictures every day for several days.

The first one is Venice for sure, the rest are of our trip between Venice and Vienna and of the city of Vienna itself.

This one is my favorite. I just love the way the sky is the protagonist in this picture, not the building behind, and the pretty shades of blue with just a hint of orange on the left.

let's take a break from all that bokeh-filled macro thanks to my recent discovery of F2.7 (aperture), and see some people.

In my opinion, the most important thing when photographing people is to capture them in their natural state. Nobody likes fake smiles. But of course, we don't want pictures in which mouths are full of food or the mouth is open so wide that you start to wonder when the last time they brushed their teeth was.

There it is. Something very difficult to capture with some people, yet incredibly easy with others. Taking a decent picture in which your subject has a natural smile and nothing else in the picture distracts you from your subject's face. That's the reason I cropped out the blurry person on the right side, yet I tried to allow as much space on that side as possible since that is where she is looking, as a picture in which her eyes almost touch the border is nowhere near as interesting. When looking at this picture, you wonder, 'what is she looking at that is so funny?' which is why it's a good idea to leave some space in that direction and give some clues as to what exactly it is.

There's plenty of space for originality and creativity, though. You can explore different angles, settings, types of light, facial expressions:

Arquitecture

I think photographing arquitecture is one of the hardest variants of photography to be creative. It seems like everything has already been done: sunrises, sunsets, storms, blue skies, and sun. But really, I believe the best way to depict it is using a wide shot and a big blue sky behind. That is truly grand.

And even that doesn't even come close to seeing such buildings in person.

This macro picture would be nowhere near as interesting were this fruit (inedible, as far as I'm concerned) centered right in the middle, but I placed it on the left (as I often do) and I took advantage of aperture settings to subtract attention to the leaves and put it all on the fruit.

I don't think I ever mentioned it before, but I've got a dog now! He's very big, very cute, hyperactive, and I love his ears! I've taken a few pictures of him other times, but I think this one is my favorite, possibly because of the simplicity of the background, and the fact that he is staring right into the camera. Also, I like the way his face is the center of attention and much larger than the rest of his body, like in a caricature.

Why you should have charged batteries always available, part 1

Some new flowers bloomed in our backyard a couple days ago. And I just couldn't resist.

So here we go, more flowers with low aperture settings (F2.7, I think):

The reason I haven't been posting this time, (I know, I know) is because there are no batteries to be found in this house. Which brings me to the thought that it is really useful to have batteries around, even if just a couple, to make sure that you don't miss those moments that you will want to remember for the rest of your life or those things that are so beautiful they make you want to laugh and cry and sing.

A few weeks ago I saw the most wonderful sunrise. The whole sky was bright orange and the mountains were covered in white snow. And I missed it because I did not have my camera with me, and I did not have my camera with me because I knew that I had no batteries in it.

P.S. My personal favorite is the very first one, because it seems brighter than the rest and quite cheerful. Coincidentally, it is also the first picture I took, but I took more because I wasn't completely satisfied, which goes to show that you should wait until you transfer the photos onto your computer to make deleting decisions, unless, of course, the picture is really blurry in the small screen in your camera, in which case you can be sure it will be even worse on the computer.

These are old pictures, but considering it's cold and dark outside I rather feel like watching these bright, pretty flowers. Also, considering that I took these with my old camera, I think this pretty much proves that you don't need an amazing, expensive camera to take a decent photograph.

When taking pictures at night or in dark conditions, adjust your exposure for the object, not the atmosphere. For example, if you want to take a picture of a Christmas tree and want the lights to be the subject of the picture, underexpose rather than overexpose. If you want both the lights and the tree to be seen clearly, underexpose slightly and that way all of it can be seen well.

So sometimes you need to be a little brave in order to get a good shot, but remember not to put yourself in serious danger. Actually, I was farther away from this bee than it seems, but I cropped it a little in order to remove distracting elements from the frame. I used macro to be able to see the bee and its hive in clear detail.

Backgrounds

The following are three pictures of the same flower, with the change that all three have different backgrounds. The way I see it, this changes the whole mood of the picture and it is crucial that you think about it before snapping away. I know I've said other times that the more pictures you take, the more good pictures will turn out, but it is also true that the more you think about a picture (its light, its shadows, its background, and plenty of other aspects) the more likely it is to be truly great and not merely nice or pretty.

Here's picture number one. Against other green plants and with the lowest aperture settings, I think that it gives out optimism and brightness.

This is picture number two. It was taken against a fence and it looks a lot sadder somehow. Sure, the flower stands out a little against the grayish brown fence, but certainly not as much as it did against the green plants.

And here is a mixture of the two. I found a leaf and placed the flower right on top. On the one hand, I like it because the colors turned out well and it reminds me of a painting, but on the other hand I got the impression it looked a little amateurish.

So I suppose you've guessed that my favorite is the first, but which one is yours?

In this picture, I also used the lowest aperture settings. By the way, I will admit that I don't know much about aperture and other settings like that, but, like I have done, I would encourage you to stop using the "auto" settings and try new things. At first, your pictures may not be that great but the more you try different settings, the less you will want to use "auto" and the better your pictures will turn out.

Also, for this picture of a dandelion, I used slightly low exposure in order to make the lovely petals stand out more and the background less, something that I also achieved with the aperture, giving the picture a very shallow depth of field, which is what makes those nice little blurry dots in the background, which are called a "bokeh" and really add personality to your images.

Venice was truly a beautiful city. We really only spent one day there, but it was worth it.
Photographically, it was dream. The sky was perfectly blue, the water made nice reflections, and the way many of the city's streets are not streets at all but channels makes it very unique.The houses are painted in beautiful bright colors, and as you walk around you can see gondolas touring the channels.

Anecdotally, even the trash collector is a boat (rather than a truck). Too bad I didn't take a picture, but it was truly a sight to see.

To make these pictures look more dramatic than the subjects themselves actually looked like, I used the lowest possible exposition and the sepia color settings. I am rather pleased with the feel of these, I really got the impression that this is what Andalucía (the south of Spain) is all about.

For rainbows I like to underexpose just a little to enhance the beautiful colors, and if you have a Canon (like me, I don't know if you have anything similar with Nikons and other camera brands) you can also select a "vivid" color setting, which also helps the rainbow stand out a bit more.

My absence this summer can be explained this time. I have been volunteering at a children's camp, that is why I have not been updating this blog. The good news, though, is that I got a new camera (also Canon) and that I have taken many pictures!

The subject in question is a colorful moth that was by the door of one of the cabins. Bear in mind, though, that this is just a few days after I got the camera, so I probably didn't get the pictures quite up to their full potential.

It really was this tiny, which just proves my point that you have to look carefully, and you will find beautiful things everywhere. Because there is no need to leave your home or go to foreign countries to take pretty photographs.

And all I have to comment about these is that the macro (although it took me months to figure out what it was for) is what makes me so happy about my canon camera!

I don't really like that word- tips. It suggests limits and rules: here is what you can do, here is what you mustn't do, and if you do this every photo will be breathtaking. But there are no such limits nor rules-

Your subject doesn't need to have his/her eyes open.

Your camera doesn't need to be level with the floor or even close to being level with the floor.

Your subject doesn't need to be doing anything funny, important, serious, amazing, unusual... well, you get my drift.

Your subject doesn't even need to be touching the floor!

To take a picture when someone is moving or jumping and you want to capture a precise moment, what I do is set everything up, take flash off and press the button to take the picture, but not completely. You have to fully press the button on the moment you want the picture to be. Also, you may want to practice that before the moment of the picture.

St. Jordi is a celebration that's done in Catalunya, on the 23rd of April, in which we celebrate love and literature. Roses are very typical of this day, as well as seeing the Catalan flag everywhere (it has thin red and yellow stripes) and book stands everywhere. There is also a legend about how St. Jordi killed a dragon to save his princess.

My tip for photographing children and pets is to catch them in their natural enviroment. They will look happier and much more natural than if you make them pose. This is not to say you shouldn't ever make them pose, but you will be taking pictures that you will one day treasure if you take pictures of the simple, everyday things you take for granted. Posed pictures are fine, of course, but not every time. You can take pictures of things that aren't particularly cute, but they could be funny, unusual, or anything else you think you might want to remember some day.

And there's often good results when you take a picture without them knowing it:

With a camera like mine it is difficult to have a clear picture with so little light. What I suggest is finding a place to rest your camera, such as the back of a chair or on a table, and that should minimize the shaking. Otherwise, if you want to, you could buy a tripod. If you plan to use it often, it's a great thing to get.

And, naturally, take more than one picture. What looks good on the tiny screen too often is not as great when you see it on the computer, because of tiny details you did not notice earlier or blurryness.

Much to my surprise, and as a photographer, joy, spring came early this year. Or so the newspapers say. Which basically means I am going to get tons of flowers to photograph, which you may have noticed are an old favorite of mine. Along with water. And my cat, Vainilla, who has- unfortunately- learned to close his eyes when I take his picture. And the beach, now that I think of it, and leaves. Okay, let's just say I like to take pictures of nature.

In honor of this awesome, great, breath-taking arrival I am going to be posting lots and lots of pictures of flowers.

Actually, this wasn't recent at all, it was taken in Moià last December. I like it because it looks like a very beautiful explosion of color.

This flower, and plenty of others, I discovered right in my backyard last Saturday, which demostrates, yet again, that you needn't go far from home to take good pictures.

This is- you guessed it- one of my cyclamens on my window sill.

And this final one is just too cute to leave it out. More to come! Don't be afraid to tell me what you think.

Trip to the snow

This is from a day our youth group went to the snow to go sledding and in general, just have fun! As you can see, we did, and I also got the chance to take several pictures.

This is the view by the hospital in Berga, on our way back. We waited a long time there, but well, we had a good time anyway!

That's the number of visitors this blog has had in the last few months since I began to blog.

I want to thank you all for your comments, and even just for coming by, for a moment anyway, and looking at my photos. I appreciate to know that you like the pictures, and the suggestions are always welcome.
The comments, of course, are still welcome! As well as suggestions, which are always nice. I'm wondering which pictures have been your favorites, to post more on those topics. So if you could comment and let me know, that would be great.
