Underexposure

When taking pictures at night or in dark conditions, adjust your exposure for the object, not the atmosphere. For example, if you want to take a picture of a Christmas tree and want the lights to be the subject of the picture, underexpose rather than overexpose. If you want both the lights and the tree to be seen clearly, underexpose slightly and that way all of it can be seen well.
